About The Samurai Game

A Samurai Game® one day event, open to the public, will take place in Amsterdam Zuidas on Friday 22nd of November 2024, delivered by certified Samurai Game® facilitator, Lawrence Warry. Calling for enthusiastic people, wishing to develop their leadership and team-participation skills, of varying backgrounds and interests, you are welcome to participate in this event.

Participants of all walks of life come to these public games and one never really knows how many people will turn up and what kind of group will materialise on the day of the game. Such public games are therefore more of a challenge to set up, and, more diverse and serendipitous than the organised private corporate/company games. People come often not knowing what they are getting into. It does require a certain level of trust to step over the line of curiosity and discovery to try the game. We are also discovering that previous players are coming back for a new experience and we notice that not one game experience is the same as the other therefore making each time one joins a unique occasion.

Whether you are an individual seeking personal growth/self-knowledge or a team manager/leader seeking improved team bonding and improved communication and leadership in your company, the Samurai Game® is powerfully effective to reach those goals. At the core of this fun game are some serious principles of Jungian psychology which build a foundation to provide the potential for a transformational process to the individual and/or team.

The Samurai Game® is considered by many to be the most unique, intense and challenging leadership and team-building experiential simulation available anywhere. Tens of thousands of individuals from around the world have participated in it, through organisational and corporate trainings & retreats, university and school leadership courses, and personal development programs. The game was invented, written, and first performed in 1977 by George Leonard, author, award-winning editor, musician, Aikido instructor and pioneer in the Human Potential movement.*

Throughout the game you will have a chance to discover your inner samurai and polish your leadership skills. You will learn to apply the the code of bushido as a way of navigating through the game to gain awareness of personal behaviour and responses to stress and confrontation. By participating in this unique event you will become a one-time only group that shall never exist in the same way again, just like an appearance of a unique shooting star that can never again be captured in the history of human experience. Even if you’ve been to a Samurai Game® event before, you are guaranteed to never have the same experience twice.

🥷🏻 About the facilitator: This edition of the event is organised by Lawrence Warry, a certified facilitator of The Samurai Game® and owner of Shinyu Leadership Development. Lawrence is the first officially certified Samurai Game® facilitator in the Netherlands and has been offering public and corporate Samurai Game® workshops since March 2013. Since then, Lawrence has built a vast knowledge of what is required to get the maximum learning out of the game, having delivered as many as 50 such events at different locations around the world. Lawrence also has a lengthy background in martial arts (namely, the Japanese martial art of Aikido in which he is currently a 5th dan instructor in The Netherlands). This experience gives useful insights into the role of the ancient Japanese samurai warrior’s character.

Having witnessed the powerful and impactful changes the Samurai Game® has brought to so many peoples’ lives in games he delivered in The Netherlands, Bulgaria and Switzerland, Lawrence is ready and willing to deliver his facilitation service to your company or organisation. Each event is organised with the highest safety standards taken into consideration. Although the games involve one-on-one challenges between individuals of two teams, the challenges never require to push over the physical/mental limits and people of all fitness levels may join. The games require the minimum of equipment and the maximum of your inner resource of courage and strength to face up to the challenges. The challenges are designed to prompt people to (amongst other things): reflect on how they respond to stress; face the dilemma between (and develop the art of balancing) honour for the team and honour for the self; pay attention and be in the present moment.

“As a 5th dan Aikido instructor, I’ve had a lengthy background in martial arts before meeting Lance Giroux, a worldwide Samurai Game® facilitator coordinator, in 2009. When Lance visited the Netherlands the following year and told me about his work, I became enthused and knew this was where my path is taking me. Without hesitation, I signed up for facilitator training and, after a three-year programme of training and experiencing the game at different worldwide events, I stood up and facilitated my first workshop in March 2013. Since then I’ve run multiple workshops, each one very different to the other, and leaving profound impressions on me and the participants. There is so much potential for the Samurai Game® to have a positive impact on our society today. I’m looking forward to meet new groups of people and guide them in The Samurai Game® for many years to come!”

– Lawrence Warry
