Are you being a manager or a leader?

We often use the terms manager and leader as if they mean the same thing. But in reality, they serve different—yet equally important—roles.

A manager focuses on the how and the when: building systems, managing budgets, and making sure day-to-day work runs smoothly. Without this structure, things can quickly become chaotic.

A leader, on the other hand, focuses on direction. It’s about the why and the where: where we’re going, who we bring along, and whether we have the right people around us. Leadership is about vision, purpose, and the “why”.

Both roles matter—and often, we’re expected to do a bit of both. So let’s explore what this looks like in practice—the how, when, and who of being a manager, a leader, or both.

During the breakroom group sessions, we’ll discuss questions related to management and leadership:

    1. ⚪️ In your experience, what distinguishes a manager from a leader?
    2. ⚪️ Do you see yourself more as a manager, a leader, or both—and what examples from your experience support that?
    3. ⚪️ What skills, mindsets, and behaviors are essential for effective leadership—and how can we develop them in our daily work?
